My Morning Retreat

I recently implemented a daily routine, a ritual of sorts, to allow myself time each morning to meditate, journal, and pull tarot cards with intention to set the tone for each day, to capture what is on my heart or mind & highlight three things for which I am grateful, and to allow for guidance from my spirit guides, my ancestors. This practice has allowed me learn to quiet my mind in the morning and to minimize the automation & programming that boots up and demands attention as soon as I become conscious. For me it is the chore list, the responsibilities that I have to others, and the notion 'there is too much too be done' that I strive to control so that it does not control me. The chores will wait. I can take an hour for myself & still meet the needs of my family, and there is only too much to be done when I keep adding to the list.
This morning, I journaled about my excitement for my two oldest sons, my brother, and other family members coming to visit soon for the holidays. I expressed gratitude for the time that I have allowed for myself each morning, for the lessons I have learned in the past year & years long gone, and for my health, home, & heart (my family & my friends). Finally, with my excitement & gratitude in mind, and with intention to receive guidance & wisdom, I began shuffling the deck (pictured below).
In my practice, I shuffle the deck until cards fall to the table. Today, I received three cards, all of which were revealed upright. I referred to the deck's book, which explains what each card represents. From this morning's reading I extrapolated: (1) Wheel of Fortune (Change, Fate, Karma): Change is coming to my life and ushering in a critical new phase. I can choose to resist or I can choose to adapt, but these changes are occurring for my highest good. I need to stay active and avoid complacency. (2) Eight of Wands (Progress, Movement, Rapid Actions): Progress is a process and things are falling into place for me. There is freedom in structure and boundaries. Opportunities are coming my way and the universe is working in my favor! (3) Queen of Pentacles (Earth Mother, Nourishment, Hearth): There is nothing like a mother's love. This card represents the ultimate Earth Mother, nourishing me with love, comfort, & support and maintaining a balance between work & home. I am being asked to invest in myself to create the ultimate freedom on a financial & spiritual level and to allow abundance to flow naturally.
I took away this: As extended family with different ideologies come together in my home, I need to maintain my morning practices to remain prepared for whatever changes are coming (I'm thinking of this visit itself, the New Year, other astrological influences & shifts, etc). My morning structure, my routine, must be protected by a time & space boundary ("I need one uninterrupted hour in this room") and I will need to enforce that boundary with others when they are in my home for this extended visit. This will ensure that my progress is not stifled, and will also set my outlook each day in a positive way so that we can all enjoy our time together! The final card brought a tear to my eye, "there is nothing like a mother's love". This card resonated deeply as I anticipate my oldest children coming home! It also reminded me of my connection with my own mother (and grandmothers) which I have been strengthening through this morning practice. It helped me reflect on my connection to my mother-in-law as well, who has welcomed me and my older kids into her family. She is also the only living grandmother in the family. Through all of this, I am being nourished with love & comfort in my daily practices of self-care, self-love and spirituality, which provide me the source & energy to create an environment filled with love & comfort for my family & friends. My time in the morning is an investment in myself and it needs to be honored as I continue working for the financial & spiritual freedom toward which I have been making progress this year. The more I have, the more I have to share & give to others.
At this point in my life, I can celebrate that I have the opportunity to use my time & resources to make the greatest investment of all, an investment in ME, and trust that everything else will unfold accordingly, and abundantly, as long as I am intentional, grateful, and kind, with myself & with others.
